Dear McLaren Friends, Alas, my dearly beloved 2013 911 Carrera 4 has passed out of my hands. Despite the prior belief that I would keep the 911 forever... now with a new owner. In 2013, I partook in the Porsche European Delivery Program, taking delivery of my 911 in Zuffenhausen, Germany, touring 4 weeks through Germany, Italy (including the famous Stelvio Pass), Belgium, and France. Alas, it was quite a bond to break in trading in the 911. Why a McLaren? A good friend of mine (Owner of Craig Husar Watch Boutique, Brookfield, WI) recently purchased an Aston Martin DBX. English car, huh? ...I pondered. Well this led directly to McLaren. Porsche says: “There is no substitute.” With McLaren I say: "There is no other beyond the cars made at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England." An issue arose during my drive home: Suspension Failure Warning (due to one bad Suspension Accumulator) McLaren Sterling Washington arranged to have the McLaren Dealer nearest me, McLaren Chicago to pick up the 720s a few days after I arrived home. After a few weeks, the following was completed in Chicago: All 4 Suspension Accumulators replaced with latest, more robust design Moderate Coolant Leak fixed The Accumulator replacement. The Coolant Leak was due to an uncompleted clamp recall. Both of these were a nominal charge. Regarding the purchase experience at McLaren Sterling Washington: The McLaren 720s is the best car I have owned thus far. I arrived one day prior to pickup to perform a primary viewing of the car in the showroom. With a few good restaurant locations in hand, provided by Luke, plus a batch of photos, I proceeded to the hotel and dinner. The following day, the time at the dealer rocketed by as Luke and I reviewed the 720s and chatted. 3-4 hours later I was on my way home via a route which included: 1. The Udvar-Hazy Center Aerospace Museum 2. Thomas Jefferson's Monticello 3. George Washington's Mount Vernon 4. Virginia Museum of Transportation 5. The Richmond, West Virginia State Capitol Building 6. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway The 720s... A very special car. Gorgeous, outstanding, superfast, racecar handling. This is what Matt Klucha has to say about the McLaren 720s, which I have named “Matt's Silver Fox.” "A symphony of form and function, where beauty isn't an afterthought, but an essential element." "The acceleration pins you back like a fighter jet on takeoff. It's exhilarating, almost violent, but perfectly controlled." Many Thanks to Sterling Washington McLaren and McLaren Cars in Surry, England. And a solid Thanks to McLaren Chicago for making things right. Not surprising in retrospect, the 10–12-hour drive home to Wisconsin from Virginia included at least 2 hours fielding questions from a wide range of people, younger and older, who took photographs and videos. One young man asked to take a video of me departing a gas station. He got a “thumbs-up” to boot. Others asked me to stand near the car for a photo. The 720s, a truly special car. Alas, though the 911 and I accumulated years of memories in Europe, Connecticut, Vermont, Manhattan & Long Island, NY, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Illinois, and more, trust me friends, with a top speed of 212 mph, the McLaren 720s should prove to accumulate great memories somewhat more expeditiously! Enroute home, driving on excellent roads, visiting cool places, and meeting numerous people amplified the connection and bonding to the car while accumulating great and diverse memories. To current and future owners of McLaren Cars, be certain to take your car on a long drive or tour, you might find yourself bonding with the car in ways otherwise not possible. Cheers. McLaren, making new memories... "...is never too late to create fabulous new memories..." - Matt Klucha 03.2024
