Hummer began in January 1992 in Detroit when AM General introduced the civilian H1 based on the military Humvee. That year the first H1 models reached select US dealers and quickly became known for unmatched offroad capability. An early milestone came when Hummer appeared in films and music videos, cementing its image as a luxury utility vehicle. The brand carved out cultural impact by blending rugged performance and high status. Its bold styling stood out on city streets and inspired other manufacturers to develop lifestyle SUVs. After GM acquired the brand in 1999 the lineup expanded to H2 and H3 models aimed at mainstream buyers. Today Hummer lives on as an electric GMC subbrand focusing on zero emission power and advanced offroad technology.
