Lucid began in 2007 as Atieva, founded by Tesla alum Bernard Tse, Sam Weng and Sheaupyng Lin to build EV batteries and drivetrains. After securing significant Chinese and venture backing, CTO Peter Rawlinson joined in 2013 and led the 2016 rebrand to Lucid Motors. The company broke ground on its first factory in Casa Grande and in September 2021 rolled out the Lucid Air sedan, marking its shift from supplier to full automaker. From the outset Lucid set out to push EV engineering limits with a 900-volt electrical architecture and proprietary cell design that enabled the Dream Edition Air to achieve a 520-mile EPA-rated range, the highest ever tested at the time. Lucid has since parlayed its powertrain expertise into a supply deal with Aston Martin and launched its second model, the Lucid Gravity SUV, which began production in December 2024. The brand now aims to build 20,000 vehicles in 2025 and is developing a more affordable mid-sized EV for the broader market.
