Mitsubishi Motors was officially formed on April 22, 1970, when the automotive division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was spun off into its own company in Shibaura, Minato, Tokyo, Japan. However, its automotive origins date back to 1917, when Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., introduced the Model A, Japan’s first series-production automobile, laying the foundation for the brand’s engineering legacy. In 1937 the company developed the PX33 prototype, the first Japanese-built passenger car with full-time four-wheel drive, a technology it would later return to in its quest for motorsport and consumer-grade all-wheel-drive systems. Today, Mitsubishi’s lineup centers on SUVs and crossovers, anchored by the Outlander range and notably the Outlander PHEV, launched in January 2013 as the world’s first plug-in-hybrid electric SUV. Strategically, it focuses on electrification and sustainable mobility, leveraging its role within the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance to drive BEV and PHEV development across global markets.
