Rivian began as Mainstream Motors when RJ Scaringe started the company in Rockledge Florida in June 2009. The venture rebranded to Rivian Automotive in 2011 and zeroed in on electric vehicles. A major early milestone came in 2017 with the acquisition of a former Mitsubishi plant in Normal Illinois. That move set the stage for production of the electric adventure rigs that followed. In late 2021 Rivian delivered its first R1T pickup truck to customers. The model carved out a niche as the first all electric pickup on the market. Rivian next shipped the R1S SUV and rolled out electric delivery vans for Amazon. Today the company is ramping lower cost models and expanding its charging network while it builds toward profitable scale.
